El mundo de las carreras de autos siempre nos entusiasma con sus tecnologías, avances y desarrollos que eventualmente llegarán a los modelos normales. Justo este efecto ha creado Michelin con su neumático Pilot Sport 4, que se fabricó para los monoplazas eléctricos de la Fórmula E.
Este campeonato tiene competencias en las que se cambia de auto completamente en un promedio de 20 vueltas, por ello, el ritmo de carrera es mayor y el desgaste se incrementa. Los neumáticos utilizados cuentan con una medida única y especial en el mundo de los monoplazas, ya que se acercan más a las llantas de un vehículo de calle; por ejemplo, adelante monta un 245/40 R18 y atrás un 305/40 R18, tamaño adecuado para un desempeño Ultra-High Performance. Es decir, deportivos puros.

La idea de Michelin para crear este neumático fue dotar a los autos de carrera con máxima adherencia en seco o lluvia, gracias a la tecnología Bi-Compound Touch que se encuentra en la banda de rodamiento. El centro es de material sílice, que mejora el agarre, y las partes externas tienen ranuras profundas que permiten evacuar agua, manteniendo el control.
Obviamente, la durabilidad lo es todo en una carrera y Michelin lo tiene en mente con el Pilot Sport 4, que soporta las rondas de prácticas, clasificación y carrera. En competencia es muy importante que los neumáticos tomen temperatura rápidamente, pero sin que signifique degradación. Esto se logra gracias a las tecnologías de Dynamic Response, las cuales incorporan aramida y nailon en su construcción.

Uno de los puntos que solemos menospreciar en una llanta es su capacidad de frenado, pero es de suma importancia y en las competencias soportar la frenada hasta al final puede significar un rebase o evitar una colisión. Por ello, la Pilot Sport 4, gracias a sus componentes, permite frenar hasta en dos metros antes sobre piso mojado y ofrecer una adherencia de hasta 8% en curva bajo la misma situación; en el caso de piso seco, la distancia se reduce en un metro, con respecto a su competencia de llantas Ultra-High Performance.
